A letter from our founder

O is for Onyina

Onyina is the Akan word for the silk-cotton tree, the tallest tree in the West African forest, roots deep enough to anchor the ground around it, a canopy wide enough to shelter everything growing beneath it. We didn't pick the name lightly. It's the company we're trying to build: deep roots in the markets we come from, and a canopy wide enough to hold more than one thing under it.

What is Onyina Group?

Onyina Group is a technology holding company. We build and back software for what we call the global majority, the billions of people the world's biggest tech companies treat as an afterthought, if they think about them at all. Most of the internet's infrastructure was built for the already-connected. We're building for everyone else, starting with the market we know best.

Under the canopy today are two live products, with more coming.

SabiDoc is a telehealth marketplace built for Ghana and West Africa, connecting patients to verified doctors and pharmacies in a region where the quality of your healthcare still depends far too much on where you happen to live. "Sabi" means to know, to understand. SabiDoc exists so getting care doesn't require already knowing the right person.

FinPulse Ai is an AI-powered finance coach that meets people where their money actually moves, through mobile money. By reading MoMo transactions directly, FinPulse Ai gives people real financial coaching without first asking them to adopt a banking system that was never built with them in mind. It's live today at finpulseinc.com.

Both come from the same conviction: the next wave of essential software won't be built in Silicon Valley and exported here. It'll be built by people who understand these markets from the inside, for the people living in them.

Built from the inside

Ghana and West Africa don't need software imported and adapted. They need software built by people who've lived the problem, not studied it from a deck. We have. Onyina pairs deep roots in Accra with the technical discipline to build at real scale, a combination most companies serving this region don't have on both sides. SabiDoc and FinPulse Ai are the first proof: healthcare access and financial access, tackled by people who understand exactly why both have stayed unsolved this long.

Ato leads Onyina as CEO, drawing on more than 15 years across investment banking and venture-backed growth companies to drive our expansion from Accra to London to Washington, DC. I founded Onyina and serve as CTO. After years building high-stakes systems, starting in the military, then in global infrastructure, I get to spend my days as the architect of what we're building now, which still doesn't feel like a normal way to spend a career, in the best way.

We built Onyina because we didn't want to choose between building for home and building at scale. We don't think you should have to either.

What we're excited about

  • Building infrastructure for markets everyone else treats as an afterthought.
  • Solving access problems, to healthcare, to financial tools, with technology designed around how people actually live, not how Silicon Valley assumes they live.
  • Giving each company under Onyina room to build its own identity and go deep on its own market.
  • Growing the canopy: every new venture we add should make the ones already here stronger, not thinner.
  • Proving world-class technology can be built in Accra, for Accra, and for the hundreds of millions of people who live like Accra does.

The canopy is our metaphor: deep roots, wide reach, shelter for whoever builds beneath it. This is just the beginning of what grows here.

The Onyina Vision

The Canopy Grows

The world's largest technology companies serve roughly a third of the world's economies well. Onyina is building the software stack for the rest, and the rest, it turns out, is where most of the world lives. A growing group of companies across health, finance, language, and beyond.
